Ten Famous People with Atopic Eczema

People have experienced different things happening to their skin at some point in their lives. Sometimes the skin breaks out into hives. Other times, people experience intense acne. It is not a surprise that so many skin diseases exist in the world. Atopic Dermatitis, also known as Atopic Eczema, is just one of them. Worldallergy.com states that 1-10 percent of the adult population suffers from the illness, and according to national eczema.org, almost 31.6 million people in the US suffer from Eczema. That is nearly 10.1 percent of the population. Like most other diseases, it affects not just one group of people. People of all age and race groups can suffer from it. Even famous personalities know what it is like to suffer from Eczema. But before we get into that, let's define the term Eczema.

Understanding Atopic Eczema…

Most people experience cracked skin and itchiness at some point in their lives. However, if it persists, one might be suffering from Atopic Dermatitis. This is also known as Atopic Eczema, and it is considered an inflammatory skin condition, which relapses quite often. It also hinders the skin's ability to hold moisture. It is one of the most common skin diseases and is hereditary. Unlike other skin diseases, Eczema starts in childhood or early infancy and can go all the way to adulthood. However, that is not always true, as some individuals had reported that it began when they were adults. All is not lost, though. Eczema is, in no way, a death sentence. There are plenty of treatments that one can take to manage it. These include but are not limited to Phototherapy, Biologic therapy, and immunosuppressant.

The famous individuals who suffer from it

We live in a superficial world where famous individuals, especially celebrities, are expected to live perfect lives. When we think of skin diseases, famous personalities never cross our minds. It is always the average middle/lower class individuals who are expected to have such conditions. Nothing can be further from the truth. Yes, famous personalities, mainly celebrities, are known to have ostentatious lifestyles. They are associated with mansions, summer home, yachts, Mercedes, and what not? The media also gives the impression, and so, one rarely believes that these famous people could suffer from a disease like Eczema. But they do, and some of them have come out to talk about it in detail. So let's begin.

  1. Adele

The famous singer who has been making headlines quite recently over her weightless journey outed her condition in one of her interviews. Since she has a reputation for being quite honest, she stated that she had Eczema from trying to boil her baby's bottles. Since heat triggers Eczema in some sufferers, it explains why Adele started to experience itchy hands and fingers.

  1. Kate Middleton

A figure who does not need any introductions is also reported to suffer from Eczema. On-screen and in real life, she is the epitome of elegance and beauty. It is as if she has stepped out from one of the beauty magazines. However, the Duchess of Cambridge's friend revealed that she suffered from red and flaky skin. It's hard to believe that someone as flawless and Kate Middleton can suffer from Eczema, but she does. The other girls even bullied her in her boarding school for not having perfect skin.

  1. Brad Pitt

One of Hollywood's biggest stars, but even he suffers from Eczema. It was on the set of the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” that Brad's Eczema flared up. He was wearing prosthetic makeup, which triggered his skin, and he broke out. His co-star, Cate Blanchette, told the Daily Record that she lent Brad some skin cream to treat the condition. Perhaps for some people, a combination of skin cream is the only solution to the problem. It worked in Brad Pitt's case; it might work in their case too.

  1. Nicole Kidman

This woman is considered to be gorgeous by all standards and is undoubtedly envied in Hollywood for her looks. But she is also susceptible to sensitivity and skin allergies. Once, she was spotted in London with raw-red hands, which confirmed that she was a sufferer of Eczema. It seems the skin disease has it out for even the most desirable of people.

  1. Olivia Cooke

If you have ever watched the creepy sitcom Bates Motel, you would know the famous star. In one of her interviews with Interview Magazine, she stated that she suffers from Eczema. According to Cooke, her Eczema is triggered by stress. However, she is a unique individual. Instead of making this a hurdle, she used it to her advantage. In her audition for the movie, The Fault in Our Stars, she was stressed and had Eczema. She did not wash her hair for three days and went into the audition without putting on any makeup. Since she was going to audition for the cancer role, she thought it would be best to look sick. Olivia does not seem to be too worried about her condition; it would seem. The famous star has confessed that she has a very minimalistic skincare routine and only used a blemish controlling face wash to control her Eczema. It seems the routine has worked out for her.

  1. Nadia Sawalha

She is a panelist on the daytime TV show Loose Women and has been very vocal about her Eczema. For her, the eczema woes began when she was just a teenager trying to get through life. She had a bad break up, and it triggered the condition, especially on her hands. It seemed to subside for a while, but then it reared its ugly head when she gave birth to her daughter in 2003. Nadia claims that the condition was so bad she used to bleed from her hands. It got to the point where she had to keep her hands bandaged to prevent an infection.

  1. Kerry Washington

She is another famous person who suffers from this skin ailment. However, she has managed to find products that make it easier to live with the condition. In an interview with Glamour magazine, Kerry revealed that she uses a combination of fish oil supplements and omega fatty acids to keep the Eczema at bay. She also swears by the moisturizer claiming that it was too critical to live without. Perhaps those who suffer from it can dabble into this combination to see what works for them.

  1. Catherine Zeta-Jones

She is another famous actress who needs no introduction. Catherine revealed to the Instyle magazine in 2010 that she has been dealing with Eczema ever since she was a child. Her mother would use Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream to cover her skin, and she uses it to this day to prevent the resurgence of Eczema. According to her, it is much worse in cold temperatures and low humidity.

  1. Jessica Simpson

A famous fashion designer, singer and actress. She revealed in her Instagram post that she suffers from Eczema. According to her, she has been dealing with it since she was a child. It was only recently that her Eczema flared up badly, and her doctor recommended Eucrisa. The ointment worked well because she has now partnered with Pfizer, the makers of Eucrisa, so that people are inspired to talk to their doctors and come to a solution, the way she did.

  1. Elizabeth Falkner

She is a celebrity chef and a restaurateur who suffers from atopic Eczema. She has come forward with the illness, like most celebrities. However, she has also done more about it than others. Elizabeth has paired up with Sanofi Genzyme, the National Eczema Association, and the Dermatology Nurses Association to launch a national awareness campaign on Eczema. She wants others to feel comfortable living with the disease and know that it is not something that they need to shy away from. Elizabeth understands how the quality of life can sometimes be compromised because of Eczema and tries to spread awareness so society can become more accepting.

It is important to note that atopic Eczema is a skin condition, but it does not mean that one needs to compromise on life quality. Sure, there are bad days where people feel ashamed to come out of their rooms because their Eczema is acting up. However, that does not mean that people should resort to a life of hiding. There are so many people who want to hide this condition because they feel that they are alone and that no one will understand where they are coming from. For these reasons, celebrities and other famous personalities have become more vocal about the disease and are doing what they can to normalize the issue. For if one wants to change the situation, they need to talk about it in the open to listen and understand.
